Teams in Power BI and Microsoft Fabric collaborate in this folder-style container, which groups items such as reports, semantic models and lakehouses, controls who can access them and is assigned a capacity.

Terms in this definition
- Power BI
Microsoft's analytics and reporting service. It reaches data held on-premises through the on-premises data gateway.
- Microsoft Fabric
Analytics platform from Microsoft delivered as SaaS on top of OneLake, offering capabilities including Direct Lake and shortcuts.
- Container
Something that groups data. Blob Storage containers sit inside a storage account and hold blobs much as folders hold files; Cosmos DB containers hold items and set the scope for partitioning and throughput.
- Capacity
A reserved block of compute for a tenant whose size is fixed by its SKU; Fabric F SKUs express it in capacity units (CUs). Workspaces assigned to it unlock features like Copilot, and from F64 upwards people with free licences can view Power BI content.
Related terms
- Access control mode
Whether people can read Log Analytics data through their rights on individual resources depends on this workspace setting. Since March 2019 new workspaces default to the option that honours resource-context Azure RBAC as well as workspace rights; the stricter choice demands explicit access to the workspace or its tables.
- Admin monitoring workspace
A preview workspace for Fabric admins that appears automatically when an admin first visits Admin monitoring under Workspaces. Its data is read-only and refreshed daily, powering reports like the Govern report in the OneLake catalog, and admins can give others access with the Viewer role.
- Azure AI Developer
Built-in role scoped to an Azure Machine Learning workspace or hub: holders can do anything inside it except administer the workspace itself. For Foundry projects, the equivalent roles are Foundry Owner and Foundry User.
- Azure Machine Learning workspace
Main Azure Machine Learning resource, holding models, environments, components and data assets, recording job history and pointing to compute and datastores. Anything registered there is owned by that workspace unless it is put in a registry.
- Azure Monitor workspace
Workspace that holds only Prometheus metrics; log data belongs in a Log Analytics workspace instead.
- azureml:// URI
Data reference syntax in Azure Machine Learning, written
azureml://datastores/<name>/paths/<path>, that locates data through a datastore already registered in the workspace. - Basic
Low-cost Log Analytics table plan where ingestion is cheap but each query is charged per GB and runs at workspace scope. Full KQL and simple log search alerts are supported; standard log search alerts are not.
- Best Practice Analyzer
A prebuilt notebook you can launch for any semantic model in the Power BI service. It scores your design on over 60 checks covering speed, DAX quality, avoiding errors, upkeep and formatting, and running it calls for Build rights plus a Fabric-backed workspace.
