How VCF Operations policies decide what is collected and alerted on, and which policy applies to an object.
From Ultra Transcenders 2V0-17.25 by Tony Rough (publishing soon)
A policy is the set of rules VCF Operations uses to analyse and display data for the objects it is applied to; policies drive what you see in alerts, dashboards, views and reports.
| Policy element | What you configure |
|---|---|
| Capacity (Workload, Time Remaining, Capacity Remaining, allocation model, buffers, custom profiles) | Thresholds and overcommit ratios for capacity analytics |
| Maintenance Schedule | A time window for maintenance |
| Metrics and Properties (attributes) | Activate or deactivate collection of metrics, properties and super metrics; KPI; dynamic thresholds |
| Alert Definitions and Symptom Definitions | Activate, deactivate or override thresholds |
| Compliance | Benchmarks whose alert definitions are activated (see Chapter 10) |
| Workload Automation, pricing, configuration templates | Optimisation settings, vCenter pricing, configuration drift templates |
Policies are read-only towards the environment: they change how VCF Operations analyses objects, not the objects themselves.
Common trap: Assuming the policy with priority 1 always wins - a direct assignment of a lower-priority policy to an object overrides group-based assignments of higher-priority policies.
