Each book explains backup server in context, with comparison tables and the common traps.
Terms in this definition
- LAMP
Short for Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP (Perl and Python also fill the P): a widely used open-source stack for web applications whose database is frequently Azure Database for MySQL.
- AGDLP
Nesting pattern: users go into global groups, which go into domain local groups, which receive the permissions. AGUDLP adds universal groups for forests with several domains.
- FIRST
A DAX function available only inside visual calculations. It fetches the value at the start of one axis of the visual's matrix, which makes it handy for comparing each point with the first; its opposite is LAST.
- Repository
A group of images or artefacts in a container registry that share one name and differ by tag. Names can include slash-separated namespaces, but every repository is handled separately.
Related terms
- application backup policy
In managed mode, the backup server holds this policy, which tells Veeam Plug-ins what database data to protect and when, how and to where. Transport jobs on the database servers then deliver it to a repository.
- backup proxy
This component does the heavy lifting in a job, handling processing and moving the data, while the backup server just manages the work. In version 13 it comes in general-purpose, VMware, CDP and off-host varieties.
- BCO
Veeam saves configuration backups in this format, which packages XML exports of the configuration database so that a backup server's setup can later be recovered or moved elsewhere.
- CNG
Microsoft's newer cryptography API for Windows. A certificate of this type cannot secure the backup server; use a self-signed one or one from an internal certificate authority.
- configuration backup
A BCO-format backup of the backup server's settings, taken every day by default to a repository you pick, with optional encryption and immutability. This, rather than backing up the server as a VM, is the supported way of protecting it.
- data collection job
Enterprise Manager uses this job to copy information from each connected backup server's configuration database into its own, every quarter of an hour by default or when started by hand.
- distribution server
During automatic deployment, installers for Veeam Agents and Plug-ins reach protected computers from this server. Normally the backup server fills the role, though another server can be assigned to lighten its load.
- ECC
Elliptic-curve keys for certificates. Neither Enterprise Manager nor the backup server accepts them for TLS, and the same goes for CNG certificates.
