Allows calling a function or loading a registered model in Unity Catalog, and seeing its definition. USE CATALOG and USE SCHEMA are needed too.

Each book explains EXECUTE in context, with comparison tables and the common traps.
Terms in this definition
- Registered model
A versioned model asset in Azure Machine Learning, typed as custom_model, mlflow_model or triton_model, with tags and lineage to the producing job. Registering under the same name again increments the version automatically.
- Unity Catalog
Azure Databricks' governance solution covering both data and AI in one place, with centralised permissions, auditing, data discovery and lineage.
- Usage privileges
USE CATALOGandUSE SCHEMA: alone they expose no data, yet reaching any object inside requires them, so owners of catalogs and schemas can cap what table owners share.
Related terms
- Agentic retrieval
Query approach in Azure AI Search where an LLM turns a conversation into several planned subqueries; these execute together, are reranked semantically, and the best chunks are merged. Classic RAG, by contrast, issues just one query.
- Applied steps
Power Query keeps a running log of every change you make, shown under Query settings as a list of named steps that execute top to bottom. Clicking one shows how the data looked at that stage, and steps can be renamed, moved or removed.
- Azure-SSIS IR
When Data Factory needs to execute SSIS packages, it uses this integration runtime, hosting the SSISDB catalogue in either SQL Managed Instance or SQL Database.
- CONSTITUTION.md
A database-level extended property in SSMS with Copilot instructions that outrank every other set. If
agentExecuteAsUserappears in its front matter, Copilot's queries execute as that user by means ofEXECUTE AS. - DAG
Directed acyclic graph: nodes (tasks or datasets) joined by dependency edges with no loops. Lakeflow Jobs and Lakeflow pipelines execute the nodes in order of their dependencies, running as many in parallel as they can.
- IDE
Visual Studio Code, PyCharm and similar desktop editors are IDEs. Databricks Connect, or the Databricks extension for Visual Studio Code, lets code written in them execute and be debugged on Azure Databricks.
- IMPERSONATE
The permission that lets a principal take on the execution context of another login or database user, as happens when a module is declared with EXECUTE AS.
- Init scripts
Learn suggests steering clear of these where possible: shell scripts that execute on every classic compute node during boot, before Spark comes up. If you do need one, keep it cluster-scoped and store it in a volume; DBFS-hosted scripts are end-of-life.
