An add-on for Visual Studio Code that works with SQL Server, Azure SQL databases and Fabric's SQL database: you can connect, browse objects in Object Explorer, write queries and compare schemas. Combined with the extension for SQL Database Projects, it enables local development of warehouse projects.
Also called SQL Server (mssql) extension for Visual Studio Code.

Terms in this definition
- VS Code
The code editor from Microsoft. Together with the .NET SDK and the SQL Server (mssql) and SQL Database Projects extensions, it can build, check and publish SDK-style database projects for warehouses.
- SQL Server
The relational database from Microsoft that organisations host and run themselves, in their own data centres or on VMs. Its engine also sits underneath the Azure SQL services and SQL database in Fabric.
- Auditing
Azure SQL capability that sends database audit logs to Log Analytics, Event Hubs or a storage account; that account is allowed to be in a different region.
- Serverless
Compute tier for single Azure SQL databases that scales automatically, pauses when idle and charges by the second. It is offered in General Purpose and Hyperscale, not Business Critical, and reserved capacity does not apply.
- Schema
The middle part of a Unity Catalog name (
catalog.schema.table), grouping tables, views, volumes, functions and models inside a catalog. A grant on it covers everything in it now and later, and nothing inside can be reached withoutUSE SCHEMA. - CONNECT
In SQL Server, the right to open a connection to a database. Fabric's equivalent is Read permission on an item, which allows connecting to a warehouse or SQL endpoint but not querying anything in it.
- BROWSE
Granted on a catalog, this Unity Catalog privilege lets people discover objects, read their metadata and request access, all without
USE CATALOGand with no access to the data itself. - LSDOU
The sequence in which Group Policy is processed: the local policy first, followed by site, domain and organisational unit policies. The nearest, last-processed setting takes effect unless Enforced or Block Inheritance alters that.
Related terms
- Schema compare
A tool built on DacFx, found in SSMS, Visual Studio and the MSSQL extension for VS Code, that finds the differences between two sources (databases, SQL database projects or .dacpac files in any pairing). You can leave out chosen differences, then either update the target directly or produce a script that does so.
