For a destination you specify, returns the route table in use along with the next hop's type and IP. Only routing is checked.

Terms in this definition
- Route table
Resource containing user-defined routes and attached to subnets, shaping traffic that leaves them. Attaching one to GatewaySubnet steers traffic coming in over VPN.
- Geographic
A Traffic Manager routing method that picks the endpoint according to where the user is located geographically.
Related terms
- Azure KMS
Endpoint used to activate Windows on Azure VMs: azkms.core.windows.net (20.118.99.224 and 40.83.235.53) on TCP port 1688. With forced tunnelling in place, user-defined routes sending those IPs to next hop Internet keep activation working.
- Direct connectivity
A setting in an Azure Virtual Network Manager hub-and-spoke configuration that lets spokes in the same network group reach each other without going through the hub. Their effective routes list ConnectedGroup as the next hop, and no peerings appear.
- Network Watcher
Collection of Azure network troubleshooting tools: next hop, IP flow verify, packet capture, Connection Monitor and flow logs, among others.
- Network Watcher next hop
Use it to troubleshoot routing for a destination: it returns the route table in effect (System Route or a UDR's table) with the next hop's type and IP. NSG filtering is not examined.
- Static route (Virtual WAN)
A route placed in a Virtual WAN hub route table or on a virtual network connection, with its next hop set to an NVA IP, Azure Firewall or a connection. It is how indirect spokes behind an NVA are reached.
- UDR
A static entry in a route table that takes precedence over Azure system routes, for instance sending traffic to a virtual appliance or virtual network gateway as next hop. BGP routes are learned dynamically; these are not.
- Virtual network gateway
Lives in GatewaySubnet and comes in two types, ExpressRoute or VPN. Setting it as the next hop in a UDR routes traffic on-premises.
- Virtual WAN static route
Sends chosen prefixes to a next hop like an NVA's IP address in a spoke, configured on a hub route table or a virtual network connection. Put it on the connection belonging to the VNet that hosts the NVA.
