Resource containing user-defined routes and attached to subnets, shaping traffic that leaves them. Attaching one to GatewaySubnet steers traffic coming in over VPN.

Each book explains Route table in context, with comparison tables and the common traps.
Terms in this definition
- GatewaySubnet
The subnet reserved for ExpressRoute or VPN gateways, which should be at least /27.
- OVER
Gives a T-SQL window function its window: PARTITION BY, ORDER BY and, if wanted, a ROWS or RANGE frame. Rankings and running totals can then be worked out while every row is kept.
- VPN
Traffic sent through an encrypted tunnel across a public network, as in a site-to-site connection to a VPN gateway in an Azure GatewaySubnet.
Related terms
- Association
Routing setting for a Virtual WAN hub. Each connection is associated with exactly one route table, and that table determines the routes the connection learns.
- BGP route propagation
Setting on a route table, shown as Propagate gateway routes, that decides whether routes a VNet gateway has learned are passed to the subnet. Turning it off on spoke subnets stops on-premises routes from sidestepping a firewall.
- Custom route table
Route table you create in a Virtual WAN hub to isolate traffic, for instance for a set of VNets; it can't be used once routing intent is turned on.
- defaultRouteTable
Every Virtual WAN hub ships with this route table, labelled Default. Unless configured otherwise, each connection associates with it and propagates routes to it, and branches are required to remain associated.
- Network Watcher next hop
Use it to troubleshoot routing for a destination: it returns the route table in effect (System Route or a UDR's table) with the next hop's type and IP. NSG filtering is not examined.
- Next hop
For a destination you specify, returns the route table in use along with the next hop's type and IP. Only routing is checked.
- noneRouteTable
Route table built into every Virtual WAN hub. A connection that propagates to it effectively propagates its routes to no table.
- Static route (Virtual WAN)
A route placed in a Virtual WAN hub route table or on a virtual network connection, with its next hop set to an NVA IP, Azure Firewall or a connection. It is how indirect spokes behind an NVA are reached.
