A schema-bound object that generates values on request via NEXT VALUE FOR without belonging to a table. One can feed several tables, restart, cycle or set aside a block of values; any value drawn inside a transaction that rolls back is gone.
Also called sequence object.

Terms in this definition
- VALUES
Returns in DAX the distinct column values, or table rows, still visible after filters are applied, sometimes with an extra blank entry. CALCULATE often takes the result as a table filter.
- NEXT
Restricted to visual calculations, this DAX function reads the value one step further along an axis of the visual matrix; writing OFFSET with 1 gives the same result.
- Event
Table in Log Analytics where entries from Windows event logs are kept.
- Azure Artifacts feed
Holds packages (Cargo, Universal, Python, Maven, npm, NuGet) in Artifacts; it belongs to a project or the organisation and supports views, feed roles and upstreams.
- Set
Secret permission in Key Vault for writing secrets; some older material refers to it as Create.
Related terms
- Codeless Connector Framework
Lets you create SaaS data connectors for Microsoft Sentinel without writing code, by defining four things in sequence: the custom output table, the DCR, the connector's UI and its connection rules.
- IDENTITY
A column property, written IDENTITY(seed, increment), that gives each new row the next number in a rising sequence. SCOPE_IDENTITY reports the latest value created in the current scope, and a rolled-back transaction still uses up the numbers it took.
- Identity column
Assigns a unique
BIGINTto every row inserted into a Delta table, though not always in an unbroken sequence; it is declared asGENERATED ALWAYS AS IDENTITYorGENERATED BY DEFAULT AS IDENTITY. Concurrent writes are disabled and a rebuild can change the numbers, so it suits append-only tables that no full refresh will ever touch. - Index column
Added through Add column > Index column, this Power Query column numbers rows in sequence, commonly so each row is unique or to serve as a surrogate key.
- Job
A sequence of steps executed together on one agent or runner, or on the server for agentless work. While running, each occupies one of your parallel jobs.
- L2 test
Functional, not unit: it relies on the assembly along with things like a SQL database or the file system. Each has to be self-contained so the suite can run in any sequence, beginning from a known state.
- LSDOU
The sequence in which Group Policy is processed: the local policy first, followed by site, domain and organisational unit policies. The nearest, last-processed setting takes effect unless Enforced or Block Inheritance alters that.
- Multi-stage review
Splits an access review into up to three stages run in sequence, with separate reviewers and durations per stage. You choose which reviewees carry forward, and the final recorded decision wins.
