Captures a VM's disk state, power state, settings and, if requested, memory at a moment in time, using one delta disk per virtual disk. Snapshots should not be relied on as backups.

Each book explains snapshot in context, with comparison tables and the common traps.
Terms in this definition
- State
A parameter in OAuth that carries custom data through the authorisation flow and back, as with the "Support state parameter" option in APIM.
Related terms
- Agent version
Snapshot of an agent's configuration that cannot be changed. Every edit, a single prompt tweak included, produces a new one, and rolling back simply means referencing an earlier version.
- AUTO CDC
The Lakeflow pipelines API for change data capture: it merges incoming changes into a streaming table, keeping either just the latest values (SCD 1) or full history (SCD 2), and uses an ordering column to cope with records that arrive late. A Python-only snapshot variant also exists.
- AUTO CDC FROM SNAPSHOT
A Lakeflow pipelines API, available only in Python, for sources without a change data feed: it compares one snapshot with the next and maintains an SCD type 1 or type 2 target from the differences.
- Crash-consistent snapshot
Captures just what has already been written to disk, which happens if the VM is shut down or deallocated when backup runs or if an app-consistent snapshot can't be taken; a recovery point is still created.
- Data access governance reports
Oversharing reports found in the SharePoint admin center with SharePoint Advanced Management. Snapshot reports list site permissions and content shared with Everyone or EEEU, while activity reports track sharing links and EEEU sharing across the previous 28 days.
- Day 2 action
Action taken on a resource already deployed from the catalog, such as powering off, resizing or taking a snapshot. VCF Automation Day 2 Action policies decide who may run which actions.
- Extraction type
Describes the scope of data moved by each ingestion run, which can be everything at once, only new data in batches, a continuous stream, a change data capture (CDC) feed or a snapshot taken at one moment.
- Full mode
An environment library publishing option that works out dependencies up front, building a stable snapshot during a publish lasting around 3-6 minutes and deploying it as each session begins. That makes it the better fit for pipelines and scheduled jobs, compared with Quick mode, where packages get installed when the notebook session opens.
