First-generation vSAN design. Storage is organised as disk groups, every one pairing a caching device with at least one device for capacity; ESA does away with these in favour of one storage pool.
Also called vSAN Original Storage Architecture.

Each book explains vSAN OSA in context, with comparison tables and the common traps.
Terms in this definition
- vSAN
VMware's software-defined storage, which combines local devices across a cluster's ESX hosts into one shared datastore. Available as OSA or ESA, VCF can use it as principal storage.
- General-purpose v1
The older storage account kind (
Storage), which lacks access tiers, Archive and premium file shares and retires on 13 October 2026. Converting to ZRS requires first upgrading to GPv2, a one-way change. - Pairing
Deployment pipelines link an item in one stage to its counterpart in the next. Deploying overwrites a linked item, but an unlinked item that just shares its name gets copied across as a duplicate.
- LEAST
Pass up to 254 expressions to this T-SQL function and it hands back whichever is smallest. Both Fabric Warehouse and SQL analytics endpoints support it.
- Capacity
A reserved block of compute for a tenant whose size is fixed by its SKU; Fabric F SKUs express it in capacity units (CUs). Workspaces assigned to it unlock features like Copilot, and from F64 upwards people with free licences can view Power BI content.
- Storage pool
A group of physical disks collected by Storage Spaces, out of which virtual disks, known as storage spaces, are carved.
Related terms
- Auto-policy management
A setting on vSAN ESA clusters that builds and applies a default storage policy specific to the cluster, picking the best fault tolerance for its size and type. vSAN OSA clusters do not offer it.
- Disk group
In the vSAN Original Storage Architecture (OSA), a set made of one flash device for caching and between one and seven devices for capacity, with a maximum of five sets per host. vSAN ESA does away with them, using one storage pool on each host.
