Single-parameter, multiple-condition, grouping expression, import or manual: which Business View method fits.
From Ultra Transcenders VONE-13 by Tony Rough (coming January 2027)
Business View offers three rule-based methods inside the Categorization Wizard, plus manual mapping and two import routes. Choosing correctly is mostly a question of whether the group names are known in advance and where the categorisation data already lives.
| Method | Category kind | Groups created by | Membership | Use when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single parameter | Dynamic | Veeam ONE: one group per unique value of one property | Dynamic; re-evaluated each data collection | One existing property already says everything (power state, guest OS, host) |
| Multiple conditions | Static | Administrator: each group has its own conditions joined by AND/OR | Dynamic; re-evaluated each data collection | Group names are fixed and membership depends on several properties |
| Grouping expression | Dynamic | Veeam ONE: groups named by the result of an expression | Dynamic; re-evaluated each data collection | Group names must be derived or transformed (name prefixes, age bands, CASE logic) |
| Manual categorisation | Static categories only | Existing groups; objects mapped by hand | Static until reset | A handful of exceptions that no rule captures |
| CSV import, once | Static | Groups in the file (existing groups are reused) | Static until reset | Categorisation was done in another tool and must be loaded once |
| CSV import, automatic | As in the file | Groups in the file, refreshed every data collection | Follows the file | A third-party system (CMDB) remains the source of truth |
| Import from vCenter Server / SCVMM | Read-only | Tag categories and custom properties become categories; tags and property values become groups | Overwritten every data collection | Tags or custom properties already maintained in the hypervisor |
