Somewhere Veeam keeps backups, VM copies and replica metadata. Options range from local disks and SMB or NFS shares to dedupe appliances, object storage and hardened repositories, and any of these may act as an extent of a scale-out repository.

Terms in this definition
- Azure AI Search replica
Additional copy of a search service's engine and indexes. Replicas spread queries for load balancing and improve availability, so adding them is the fix when queries are throttled with HTTP 503.
- Metadata
Describes data rather than being the data itself, for instance how a file is laid out or what rows each chunk contains, so tools can read things efficiently.
- Table options
Set only at creation with
OPTIONS, these key-value storage settings can't be altered or dropped afterwards; on Delta tables they also show up among the table properties. - RANGE
Usable only in visual calculations, this DAX function picks a span of rows along an axis counted from the current one, say the previous six. Think of it as a simpler WINDOW, handy for moving totals.
- LSDOU
The sequence in which Group Policy is processed: the local policy first, followed by site, domain and organisational unit policies. The nearest, last-processed setting takes effect unless Enforced or Block Inheritance alters that.
- SMB
Protocol for Windows file shares, used by Azure Files and supporting authentication based on identity.
- NFS
Network File System, a file-sharing protocol from the Unix world, available on Azure Files, Azure NetApp Files and Blob Storage (as NFSv3).
- Shares
A relative weighting for dividing a contended resource such as memory, CPU, network bandwidth or disk I/O: double the shares earns double the entitlement. Reservations, by contrast, are guarantees and limits are ceilings.

A deduplication storage appliance from Quantum, supported as a backup repository in Veeam Backup & Replication.
