Terms in this definition
- Azure Files
Azure's managed file shares over SMB or NFS. There is no Archive tier, and a single encryption key applies across the whole storage account.
- Azure NetApp Files
Azure service offering managed file volumes over NFS and SMB.
- Blob storage
Azure's object store for unstructured content like images and video; a single block blob can reach roughly 190.7 TiB.
Related terms
- File share
Created within a storage account, an Azure Files share works like a shared drive on an office network: clients connect to it using NFS or SMB.
- Information protection scanner
Installed on Windows Server, it looks through SharePoint Server libraries plus SMB or NFS file shares, labelling and encrypting what it discovers there and enforcing DLP policies on-premises. It can't be pointed at OneDrive.
- principal storage
Fixed at cluster creation and impossible to switch later: vSAN (ESA or OSA), VMFS over FC, or NFS v3. Supplemental storage, by contrast, can be added afterwards.
- supplemental storage
Extra storage attached to an existing VCF cluster, holding workloads or items like ISO images, templates and backups, as opposed to principal storage chosen while the cluster is being built. Some types, NFS 4.1 among them, are limited to this role.
