Adds fresh rows to a table. You list the target columns and supply a value for each; it is part of Data Manipulation Language (DML).

Each book explains INSERT in context, with comparison tables and the common traps.
Terms in this definition
- Event
Table in Log Analytics where entries from Windows event logs are kept.
- List
Permission on Key Vault secrets allowing a caller to enumerate those in a vault, though their values are not returned.
- DML
Data Manipulation Language, the SQL statements SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE, which act on the rows held in tables.
Related terms
- DBCC CHECKIDENT
Checks an IDENTITY column's current value and resets its seed. In Fabric Data Warehouse only plain
RESEEDis allowed (you can't give it a new value), and you should run it onceIDENTITY_INSERTloads have finished. - DEFAULT constraint
A constraint that fills in a column, for instance with a fixed value or SYSDATETIMEOFFSET(), whenever an INSERT leaves that column out. It has no effect on UPDATE statements.
- DML trigger
Code that SQL Server runs automatically, inside the same transaction, whenever someone tries an INSERT, UPDATE or DELETE on a table or view. It can query the inserted and deleted tables to see what changed.
- EDIT_DISTANCE
A preview fuzzy-matching function giving how many edits (insert, delete, substitute or transpose) separate two strings.
- Endpoint type
Storage account option, fixed at creation, that decides how endpoint host names are built; Azure DNS zone endpoints insert a zone identifier so far more accounts are possible. Access and networking costs are unaffected.
- INSTEAD OF trigger
A DML trigger that replaces the INSERT, UPDATE or DELETE statement that set it off. A common use is letting a view accept changes by applying them to the tables underneath.
- IX lock
The table lock that data-changing statements (INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, MERGE, COPY INTO) acquire in a Fabric warehouse. Reads take a Sch-S lock while DDL takes a Sch-M lock that blocks everything else, and current locks can be viewed in sys.dm_tran_locks.
- OPENROWSET
Lets Fabric's T-SQL engines treat data files in Azure storage or OneLake (Parquet, CSV or JSONL) as a table. That is handy for peeking at a file, or for loading it with INSERT ... SELECT or CTAS.
