NetApp's storage OS. Veeam works with it for snapshots, native changed file tracking via SnapDiff and NDMP tape backups; with a Linux backup server, SnapDiff v3 has to be enabled beforehand.
Also called ONTAP.

Terms in this definition
- General-purpose v1
The older storage account kind (
Storage), which lacks access tiers, Archive and premium file shares and retires on 13 October 2026. Converting to ZRS requires first upgrading to GPv2, a one-way change. - Veeam Infrastructure Appliance
A hardened, minimal Linux (JeOS) ISO for running backup proxies, repositories and hardened repositories. It connects to a backup server but does not host one.
- NDMP
A protocol for protecting NAS devices. Registered as an NDMP server, a device has its complete volumes, NetApp SMTape included, written to tape; a NAS already set up as an unstructured data source still has to be added separately.
- LAMP
Short for Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP (Perl and Python also fill the P): a widely used open-source stack for web applications whose database is frequently Azure Database for MySQL.
- backup server
The Windows or Linux machine running Veeam Backup & Replication, which manages and coordinates jobs, schedules and resources and keeps global settings. When first installed it also takes on the default proxy and repository roles.
Related terms
- NAS filer
Enterprise storage, for example Dell PowerScale or NetApp ONTAP, registered as a source of unstructured data. Snapshots the backup server triggers are then read by jobs, which can track changed files natively.
- storage virtual machine
A virtualised storage server within ONTAP (SVM). Orchestrator talks only to the source and destination SVMs, with ZAPI switched on for each, and never to NetApp clusters or individual nodes.
