Each book explains NTFS in context, with comparison tables and the common traps.
Terms in this definition
- Chat message roles
Labels on chat messages: instructions go under system, the person's input under user, the model's previous answers under assistant, and results returned by a called tool under tool (or function).
- Azure Files
Azure's managed file shares over SMB or NFS. There is no Archive tier, and a single encryption key applies across the whole storage account.
Related terms
- ACL
List of permissions set on a file or folder; examples include the POSIX-style lists in ADLS Gen2 and NTFS lists on Azure Files. Attribute conditions cannot be expressed in them.
- EFS
Encrypting File System: an NTFS capability for encrypting single files or folders, using keys linked to a user's certificate.
- FAT32
Lacks file-level permissions, so Windows Server features such as FSRM won't work on it; use NTFS or ReFS.
- FILESTREAM
Lets SQL Server keep varbinary(max) data as ordinary NTFS files that still stay transactionally consistent with the database. TDE doesn't encrypt this data, and ledger tables can't use it.
- FSRM
File Server Resource Manager, a Windows Server tool for controlling what is stored on NTFS volumes, offering storage reports, quotas, screening, classification and scheduled file management.
- ODX
Offloaded Data Transfer. A capable SAN moves or copies data internally, exchanging tokens rather than streaming it through the server; NTFS supports it but ReFS doesn't.
- ReFS
Resilient File System, aimed at large scale and data integrity: checksums, block cloning, mirror-accelerated parity and online repair with Storage Spaces. Windows cannot boot from it, and disk quotas and ODX, both found in NTFS, are missing.
- Share-level permissions
Role assignments made with Azure RBAC on an Azure file share. They govern which identities get in over SMB, and are evaluated ahead of NTFS permissions.
