Cisco Discovery Protocol lets an administrator see which port on a physical switch each host uplink is cabled to. vSphere supports it on distributed and standard switches alike, while LLDP requires a distributed switch.
Also called Cisco Discovery Protocol.

Each book explains CDP in context, with comparison tables and the common traps.
Terms in this definition
- Physical
Describes the concrete, real-world parts that put a logical architecture into effect.
- SWITCH
Checks one expression against several candidate values, returning whichever result pairs with the match (or a fallback otherwise). Writing SWITCH ( TRUE (), ... ) avoids nested IF chains: whichever condition is first true wins.
- vSphere
VMware's platform for virtualisation, made up of vCenter and ESX hosts, supplying compute for VCF clusters.
- Standard deployment type
A Foundry deployment type billed per token that keeps processing of prompts and responses inside the Azure geography of the resource, meeting data residency needs at lower volumes.
- LLDP
A vendor-neutral protocol that network devices use to advertise their identity to directly connected neighbours, revealing which switch port a link is plugged into; Cisco's CDP does the same job. In vSphere it is offered only on distributed switches.
Related terms
- backup proxy
This component does the heavy lifting in a job, handling processing and moving the data, while the backup server just manages the work. In version 13 it comes in general-purpose, VMware, CDP and off-host varieties.
- Continuous Data Protection
Replicates vSphere VMs by capturing every write through VAIO, with no snapshots, so the RPO is nearly zero and replicas can start at once. (Unrelated to Cisco Discovery Protocol.)
- guaranteed delivery
Keeps CDP consistent when changes arrive late. Until the target acknowledges receipt, CDP proxies buffer data, and the I/O filter on the source host keeps tracking changes, so the policy can catch up.
- RPO reporting
Lets a CDP policy flag a warning or an error if new restore points stop arriving inside the RPO you have set.
- SureReplica
Extends SureBackup-style verification to vSphere replicas, CDP ones included. A chosen replica restore point boots inside a virtual lab, goes through identical tests and gets reported on, while production carries on undisturbed.
- Universal CDP
Continuous data protection not restricted to vSphere: physical, cloud and virtual machines alike can be replicated, with VMware vSphere hosts or clusters as the destination. Each source runs Veeam's CDP Agent Service and CDP Volume Filter Driver in place of a VAIO filter.
- Veeam CDP Volume Filter Driver
Sits at volume level on each Universal CDP source machine, intercepting writes and handing them to the CDP agent service so they can be replicated.
- vSphere APIs for I/O Filtering
A VMware framework that lets CDP for vSphere intercept each write as it happens, through a Veeam filter on every ESXi host, so no snapshots have to be taken.
