Replicates vSphere VMs by capturing every write through VAIO, with no snapshots, so the RPO is nearly zero and replicas can start at once. (Unrelated to Cisco Discovery Protocol.)
Also called CDP.

Terms in this definition
- vSphere
VMware's platform for virtualisation, made up of vCenter and ESX hosts, supplying compute for VCF clusters.
- Virtual machines
Infrastructure-as-a-service compute giving complete control of the operating system, making it a fit for lift-and-shift moves and for software relying on OS-level pieces like COM.
- vSphere APIs for I/O Filtering
A VMware framework that lets CDP for vSphere intercept each write as it happens, through a Veeam filter on every ESXi host, so no snapshots have to be taken.
- RPO
Recovery point objective: how much data, expressed as time, you can afford to lose. In a VM backup policy the smallest achievable RPO is the backup frequency.
- CDP
Cisco Discovery Protocol lets an administrator see which port on a physical switch each host uplink is cabled to. vSphere supports it on distributed and standard switches alike, while LLDP requires a distributed switch.
Related terms
- CDP proxy
In continuous data protection, this proxy carries the data: it collects changes from VMs into short-term restore points, compresses and encrypts them, then forwards them to the disaster recovery site or a further proxy.
- Universal CDP
Continuous data protection not restricted to vSphere: physical, cloud and virtual machines alike can be replicated, with VMware vSphere hosts or clusters as the destination. Each source runs Veeam's CDP Agent Service and CDP Volume Filter Driver in place of a VAIO filter.
- Veeam CDP Coordinator Service
Runs on the backup server to orchestrate continuous data protection: it schedules replication transfers and decides which resources each one gets.
