Plain file transfer with no encryption. Unless its FTP state is switched to Disabled or to FTPS only, App Service will still take deployments over it; ZIP deployment is the better choice, with FTPS second.
Also called File Transfer Protocol.

Terms in this definition
- Encryption
Scrambling data so it cannot be read without the correct secret key, which is then used to turn it back again. Hashing, by contrast, cannot be reversed.
- State
A parameter in OAuth that carries custom data through the authorisation flow and back, as with the "Support state parameter" option in APIM.
- Deployment credentials
Username and password pairs for local Git and FTP/S on App Service. They use basic authentication and are not Entra identities.
- App Service
Managed PaaS hosting for web apps and Web App for Containers, run in a sandbox without OS access. Deployment slots and autoscale start at the Standard tier.
- OVER
Gives a T-SQL window function its window: PARTITION BY, ORDER BY and, if wanted, a ROWS or RANGE frame. Rankings and running totals can then be worked out while every row is kept.
- Zip deployment
Pushing a .zip package to a function app, which is how Dedicated, Premium and Consumption plans deploy by default. Setting WEBSITE_RUN_FROM_PACKAGE=1 runs the app directly from that package.
Related terms
- Basic Auth Publishing Credentials
App Service option, set independently for FTP and SCM, permitting deployment using a user name and password. Turned off for new apps by default, it has to be enabled before a container registry webhook can redeploy the app.
- FTPS
FTP secured with TLS. It can deploy to App Service and Functions but runs no build automation, and on Functions the triggers must then be synced by hand, so Microsoft Learn recommends other methods.
- Log collector
Part of Defender for Cloud Apps that you host in Docker on your own network. Your firewalls and proxies send it logs by FTP or Syslog, and it uploads them so Cloud Discovery reports stay up to date.
- SFTP
SSH-based file transfer protocol on TCP port 22. Because it is not HTTP, Application Gateway is not suitable for it.
