- 168.63.129.16
Special platform address (WireServer) through which Azure delivers the VM agent channel, built-in DNS, DHCP and load balancer health probes. Traffic to it must stay open, or those platform functions stop working.
- APIPA
When Windows gets no reply from a DHCP server it gives itself an address from 169.254.0.0/16, so seeing one generally means DHCP has failed.
- DHCP guard
A Hyper-V switch port option that discards DHCP server traffic coming from virtual machines that have no permission to hand out addresses.
- DHCP policies
Rules on a DHCP server that hand particular address ranges or options to clients meeting set criteria, for instance a vendor class or a MAC address.
- DHCP relay agent
A device, either a router or a server, that picks up DHCP broadcasts on its local network segment and passes them to a DHCP server elsewhere.
- DHCPv6
The IPv6 version of DHCP, which either supplies options alone (stateless) or leases addresses too (stateful). DHCP failover cannot protect DHCPv6 scopes.
- Dynamic update
Lets DHCP servers and clients write and refresh their own DNS records. Only AD-integrated zones can insist on secure updates.
- MADCAP
Multicast clients receive their addresses on lease through this protocol, which DHCP multicast scopes rely on.
