Container for Azure resources. Its location holds only metadata and cannot be changed afterwards, and one resource group cannot sit inside another.
Also called RG.

Each book explains Resource group in context, with comparison tables and the common traps.
Terms in this definition
- Container
Something that groups data. Blob Storage containers sit inside a storage account and hold blobs much as folders hold files; Cosmos DB containers hold items and set the scope for partitioning and throughput.
- Metadata
Describes data rather than being the data itself, for instance how a file is laid out or what rows each chunk contains, so tools can read things efficiently.
Related terms
- Administrative (Activity log category)
Category of Activity log entries covering every create, update, delete and action call made via Resource Manager, for example adding a tag, attaching a disk or creating a resource group.
- az deployment group create
Azure CLI command for deploying a template into a resource group that already exists.
- Azure Export for Terraform
Also known as aztfexport, this generates Terraform HCL code and state from Azure resources you already have, so they can be managed by Terraform. Point it at a single resource, a whole resource group or the results of a Resource Graph query, and target either azurerm or AzAPI.
- Azure Resource Mover
Azure service that relocates existing VMs, disks and NICs to another region or resource group, checking their dependencies along the way.
- Billing policy
Ties an Azure subscription and resource group to the whole tenant or to one group, so that pay-as-you-go Copilot usage (SharePoint agents or agents in Copilot Chat, for instance) gets charged. Admins create them in the Microsoft 365 admin center, can have 50 at most, and a budget on one only raises alerts.
- Budget
A spending threshold you set in Cost Management for a management group, subscription or resource group. Alerts go out as real or forecast costs approach it, yet hitting the figure never halts any resource; wiring it to an action group lets automation react.
- Deployment modes
The two ways ARM can deploy: Incremental, the default, creates or updates what the template lists and ignores everything else; Complete also removes resource group contents absent from the template.
- Disk Snapshot Contributor
For Azure Disk Backup to create and clean up snapshots, the Backup vault's managed identity must hold this built-in role over the resource group where snapshots are kept.
