Addressing based on 128 bits, available in Standard public IPs and dual-stack VNets. Public IPs for Azure Firewall and Bastion have to be IPv4.
Also called Internet Protocol version 6.

Terms in this definition
- BITS
A Windows service for downloads. Delivery Optimization hands downloads to it in Bypass mode (100), a mode now deprecated for Windows 11 that can cause failures with error 0x80d03002.
- Standard deployment type
A Foundry deployment type billed per token that keeps processing of prompts and responses inside the Azure geography of the resource, meeting data residency needs at lower volumes.
- Dual-stack
A virtual network or subnet that has an IPv6 range alongside its IPv4 one. IPv6 subnets are always /64, drawn from the VNet's IPv6 space and added to a subnet that already exists.
- Azure Firewall
Stateful network firewall run by Azure as a managed service; it can be placed in Virtual WAN hubs and administered through Firewall Manager.
- IPv4
The 32-bit version of IP addressing. It remains the address format you will see most often in log data and threat indicators.
Related terms
- AAAA
Maps a hostname to an IPv6 address in DNS; IPv4 addresses use A records.
- AAAA record
Type of DNS entry that resolves a host to its IPv6 address.
- Add-AzNetworkInterfaceIpConfig
Cmdlet in Az.Network for adding another IP configuration to a NIC that already exists. Passing
-PrivateIpAddressVersion IPv6lets a VM gain IPv6 without needing a second NIC. - DHCPv6
The IPv6 version of DHCP, which either supplies options alone (stateless) or leases addresses too (stateful). DHCP failover cannot protect DHCPv6 scopes.
- MultiValue
Traffic Manager routing method that answers each query with multiple healthy endpoints, at most 10. It accepts only External endpoints specified as IPv4 or IPv6 addresses.
- Named location
A location for Conditional Access, made either from public IPv4 or IPv6 ranges (optionally marked as trusted) or from countries worked out by IP address or Authenticator GPS. A tenant can have up to 195 IP-based ones, each holding up to 2,000 ranges.
- Public IP address
Resource in Azure for an IPv4 or IPv6 address routable on the internet, attached to a NIC, firewall, gateway, load balancer or Bastion host. Allocation, zone support and default security depend on its SKU.
- Standard SKU public IP
Public IP that is always static and may be zone-redundant, zonal or IPv6. It blocks inbound traffic until an NSG permits it, and Bastion, Azure Firewall, VPN gateways and Standard Load Balancer all require it.
