The modern firmware standard that took over from BIOS. Because Hyper-V generation 2 machines use it, they can start up from a virtual SCSI disk and have Secure Boot switched on.
Also called Unified Extensible Firmware Interface.

Terms in this definition
- Standard deployment type
A Foundry deployment type billed per token that keeps processing of prompts and responses inside the Azure geography of the resource, meeting data residency needs at lower volumes.
- OVER
Gives a T-SQL window function its window: PARTITION BY, ORDER BY and, if wanted, a ROWS or RANGE frame. Rankings and running totals can then be worked out while every row is kept.
- BIOS
Generation 2 Hyper-V machines use UEFI with Secure Boot; Generation 1 machines rely on this older firmware.
- Hyper-V
The hypervisor built into Windows. The VMs for the Azure Extended Network appliance require the Hyper-V role, using nested virtualisation, and an external virtual switch for each NIC.
- SCSI
Small Computer System Interface, a standard for connecting disks. Hyper-V lets you hot-add or remove virtual SCSI disks on a running VM, and generation 2 VMs start up from them.
- HTTP / HTTPS
The protocols of the web, with HTTPS being HTTP secured by TLS.
Related terms
- MBR
An older partitioning scheme tied to BIOS, allowing at most four primary partitions and disks up to 2 TB. On UEFI machines, GPT takes its place.
- UEFI CA
Rather than trusting Windows alone, this generation 2 VM Secure Boot option lets Linux boot loaders run if Microsoft's UEFI Certificate Authority has signed them.
