Terms in this definition
- FORMAT
A DAX function that turns a value into text according to a format string, for instance "MMMM" to show a month's name. Since the output is text, numeric operations can't use it, and dynamic format strings were introduced to get around that.
- CRUD
Shorthand for create, read, update and delete, the four basic things you do with data. Data-plane roles in Azure Cosmos DB, for instance, authorise those operations on items.
- Container
Something that groups data. Blob Storage containers sit inside a storage account and hold blobs much as folders hold files; Cosmos DB containers hold items and set the scope for partitioning and throughput.
- Azure Container Registry
Private Azure registry for container images. Images can be geo-replicated, cleaned up by retention policies and built by ACR Tasks, while webhooks let a push kick off continuous deployment.

- Approvals and checks
Resource owners configure these in the web portal rather than YAML, on environments, agent pools, repositories, secure files, variable groups and service connections; a stage can't use the resource until all pass. GitHub's equivalent: environment protection rules.
- Azure Machine Learning CLI v2
Extension adding
az mlcommands to the Azure CLI, used to create jobs, assets, endpoints and deployments defined in YAML files. - AzureAppConfigurationImport@10
Pushes key-values into an App Configuration store from a file (properties, YAML or JSON) during a pipeline run; tags, a label, a key prefix and strict mode can be added if wanted.
- Classic pipelines
Azure Pipelines definitions built in a web designer instead of YAML. Microsoft recommends YAML; classic ones remain supported, though new organisations can't create them by default.
- Conda specification
To build a versioned Azure Machine Learning environment, this YAML file names the Python packages to be layered onto a base Docker image.
- Declarative Automation Bundles
Describes jobs, pipelines and other workspace resources in YAML and deploys them together as one project; this is the recommended route to CI/CD. The product was renamed, but its
databricks bundlecommands did not change. - Deployment group
Found only in classic release pipelines: machines running a deployment agent, picked out by tags. In YAML, an environment with VM resources does the same job.
- Deployment job
A special kind of YAML pipeline job, declared with - deployment:, aimed at an environment so that every release to it is logged, and run with a runOnce, rolling or canary strategy. Unlike an ordinary job, it does not fetch the source code by default.
