Input/output operations per second measure how fast a disk performs; a P50 disk, for instance, offers 7,500.
Also called input/output operations per second.

Each book explains IOPS in context, with comparison tables and the common traps.
Terms in this definition
- Measure
A figure like total revenue, worked out by aggregating fact table data wherever dimensions intersect within a semantic model.
- Kerberos armoring
Wraps Kerberos pre-authentication in an encrypted tunnel; Group Policy must enable support on both clients and domain controllers.
Related terms
- IO
Input/output refers to reads and writes against storage; Premium Azure Files delivers IO latency in single-digit milliseconds. Compare IOPS.
- KB
Knowledge base article from Broadcom support covering a procedure or known issue. Elsewhere, KB means kilobyte, as in the 32 KB size used as the IOPS unit.
- Performance-based assessment
Rather than copying on-premises allocations, this Azure Migrate assessment uses recorded CPU, RAM, IOPS and throughput data to recommend disk types and Azure VM sizes.
- Premium SSD
Managed disk type on solid-state storage aimed at production and IO-heavy work, such as SQL Server data and log files. For example, a P50 gives 7,500 IOPS and a P60 gives 16,000.
- Premium SSD v2
Lets you tune capacity, throughput and IOPS independently, with 125 MB/s and 3,000 IOPS included free. This managed disk offers no host caching and cannot hold an operating system.
- Provisioned v1
The earlier Azure Files billing model, available on SSD only, where IOPS and throughput follow from how much storage is provisioned.
- Provisioned v2
Billing for Azure Files where IOPS, throughput and capacity are each chosen separately. Available for HDD and SSD, it is the advised model for any new deployment.
- SMB Multichannel
A feature of Azure Files letting an SMB 3.1.1 client use multiple connections to one share to raise IOPS and throughput. Only premium shares (SSD, FileStorage) support it.
