Each book explains ARM in context, with comparison tables and the common traps.
Terms in this definition
- Control plane
Management layer used to create, configure and remove resources, as distinct from the data plane where they are used. Azure Resource Manager fills this role for Azure, and in AKS Azure operates the Kubernetes control plane on your behalf.

- ARM template test toolkit
Run via
Test-AzTemplate, these PowerShell checks compare templates and parameter files against best practice for ARM. For Bicep, use the Bicep linter, since the toolkit can't check it. - ASM
Short for Azure Service Manager, the classic deployment model that came before Azure Resource Manager. New resources should not use it.
- Azure Deployment Environments
Retiring on 22 February 2027 (Microsoft points people to Azure Verified Modules, Bicep or ARM deployments and Azure DevOps or GitHub workflows). Until then, it gives developers self-service app infrastructure built from curated IaC definitions kept in dev center catalogs, governed by platform engineers.
- azure/arm-deploy
Action deploying Bicep or ARM templates to management groups, subscriptions or resource groups from GitHub.
- Bicep
Domain-specific language for declaring Azure infrastructure as code, which is compiled into ARM templates.
- Checkov
Open-source scanner for infrastructure-as-code that Microsoft Security DevOps runs; because it understands Terraform, ARM, Kubernetes manifests, CloudFormation, Helm charts and Dockerfiles, its format coverage exceeds Template Analyzer's.
- CloudAuditEvents
Fed by Microsoft Defender for Cloud, this advanced hunting table captures control-plane activity in the cloud, for example Azure Resource Manager operations or Kubernetes audit records.
- copy (ARM template)
Loop element in ARM templates for creating several resources, properties (for example
storageProfile.dataDisks), variables or outputs, with a ceiling of 800 iterations.
