Each book explains SSD in context, with comparison tables and the common traps.
Terms in this definition
- General-purpose v1
The older storage account kind (
Storage), which lacks access tiers, Archive and premium file shares and retires on 13 October 2026. Converting to ZRS requires first upgrading to GPv2, a one-way change. - Premium
Hosting plan for Azure Functions that keeps instances pre-warmed to avoid cold starts and supports VNet integration. Executions time out after 30 minutes by default, which host.json can extend.
Related terms
- Business Critical
Azure SQL vCore tier offering the lowest latency by running Always On replicas on local SSD, plus zone-redundant failover that loses no data; serverless isn't offered.
- Caching policy
Determines the period for which KQL database or table data is held on local SSD in the hot cache so that queries over it are quick. The period may not exceed retention, and you configure it from Manage > Data policies.
- Intelligent cache
A Fabric Spark feature, enabled by default and allowed half of each node's disk, that keeps copies of OneLake files on the node's local SSD and swaps out stale ones automatically. It differs from calling cache() on a DataFrame, which is something you control in code.
- Media tier
Azure file shares sit on either HDD (standard), which costs less, or SSD (premium), which gives lower latency. Switching tiers means copying the data to a new share.
- Provisioned v1
The earlier Azure Files billing model, available on SSD only, where IOPS and throughput follow from how much storage is provisioned.
- Provisioned v2
Billing for Azure Files where IOPS, throughput and capacity are each chosen separately. Available for HDD and SSD, it is the advised model for any new deployment.
- SMB Multichannel
A feature of Azure Files letting an SMB 3.1.1 client use multiple connections to one share to raise IOPS and throughput. Only premium shares (SSD, FileStorage) support it.
- Storage tier
Lets one volume span SSD and HDD by grouping disks of a single media type within a Storage Spaces pool. New-StorageTier creates them.
