Text-based format for structured data. ARM templates and Cosmos DB documents are written in it, and most Azure REST APIs exchange request and response bodies as application/json.
Also called JavaScript Object Notation.

Each book explains JSON in context, with comparison tables and the common traps.
Terms in this definition
- FORMAT
A DAX function that turns a value into text according to a format string, for instance "MMMM" to show a month's name. Since the output is text, numeric operations can't use it, and dynamic format strings were introduced to get around that.
- Structured data
Every record has the same fields, because the data must fit a schema fixed before storage; relational tables are its usual home.
- ARM
Short for Azure Resource Manager, the control plane Azure uses for deploying and managing resources.
- Cosmos DB
NoSQL database distributed globally, offering writes in multiple regions, automatic indexing and latency below 10 ms.
- REST
Short for representational state transfer, the style of HTTP API that Azure services expose.
Related terms
- AnalysisResult
Object that
poller.result()returns in Content Understanding; its JSON body carries the extracted fields and markdown content. - App manifest
Portal-editable JSON describing a Microsoft Entra app registration's attributes, including keyCredentials, accessTokenAcceptedVersion and groupMembershipClaims.
- ARM template
JSON file describing Azure infrastructure declaratively. Once deployed it keeps no live connection to the resources, unlike Blueprints, which retires fully on 31 January 2027.
- ASCII
An encoding for human-readable files like JSON or CSV that turns their bytes into printable characters. Unicode supports far more characters.
- AuditData
When audit search results are exported to CSV, this field carries the full detail of every record as JSON. Excel's Power Query can expand that JSON into individual columns.
- Avro
An Apache file format that stores rows: a JSON header describes the layout, followed by record blocks held as binary. It compresses well, cutting storage needs and bandwidth.
- AzureAppConfigurationImport@10
Pushes key-values into an App Configuration store from a file (properties, YAML or JSON) during a pipeline run; tags, a label, a key prefix and strict mode can be added if wanted.
- BSON
Binary JSON, the binary form of JSON that MongoDB uses. Azure Cosmos DB for MongoDB uses it too, and you query it with MQL, the MongoDB Query Language.
